Our Stories: 2016 Fundraising for EVC Uganda

August 2016

In the Spring of 2016 our intrepid volunteers put themselves through the agony of half and full marathons and the little matter of a 97 mile walk !!! All to raise funds for EVC projects in Uganda. Very many thanks to all friends, families and sponsors as we raised a superb £2,500. Here are some reflections.

Bath Half Marathon, 13th March 2016

Millie

First to put on her running shoes was Millie with a superb half marathon around the City of Bath in early March. This got us off the mark and set the standard for the season.

Sheffield Half Marathon, 10th April 2016

 Ramon, Mike, Lewis and Steve

'We all really enjoyed the race - and to be back at the City of Sheffield where we went to University made it extra special. By the end - all of us apart from poor Steve beat our personal best times - in which he sustained an injury half way - but battled through to the end!'

Edinburgh Half Marathon, Sunday 29th May 2016

Stacey

The half marathon was a huge challenge for me. My feet were giving up at mile 7, my legs at mile 10, and the rest of my body followed at mile 12. The support and sponsorship from friends and family, seeing supporters in the crowd, high fiving strangers, and running the whole thing with friends by my side helped me get myself over the finish line and achieve something I never thought I could. No chance I’m doing it again though.

Harriet

Haha, my thought too! Here goes..."during my training there was always an annoying voice yelling at me to 'never stop'...and I never really took any notice. But on race day my legs obeyed and miraculously managed to make it the 13.1 miles without stopping-I'm not sure whether it was that annoying voice or the promise of food and prosecco at the finish line!"

Rebecca

"The first 8 miles were enjoyable, after that I don't remember much, except wanting it to end! My running ‘technique’ was certainly questionable by the end of the run!!”

Prague Marathon, Sunday 8th May 2016

Gordon

Crossing the finish line was one of the best feelings ever. The sense of personal achievement, (26.2 miles and I did it !!!), the support of family and friends and the generosity of sponsors made it all worthwhile. The race day was fantastic, colourful and noisy and it all helped to push you along and shorten the journey. Would I do it again, yes probably, but not for while.

97 Mile Walk

Viv and Roisin

Rebecca walked 17.5 miles with Viv and Róisín at the end of their 97 mile walk! Very inspiring - they braved all sorts of weather and survived through the consequences!

The weather was challenging, as were the blisters, muscle aches and scratches we sustained along the way, but the amazing support we could see coming in via our btdonate page was incredible and spurred us on no end.

How can you help?

It costs £300 to sponsor a child ( £25 monthly standing order ) This provides a child with an education, accommodation, clothing and food and pays teaching and non teaching staff. You can also donate securely through KindLink.
