Lockdown continues: Children are learning from home
July 2020
The schools in Uganda have been closed for almost the whole time the UK has been in lockdown. Initially, the candidate classes were expected to return to school at the beginning of June, but the Ugandan president extended their lockdown and announced that the schools, for now, will remain closed.
In order to help children study at home, lessons are being broadcast on television and radio, but as the children supported by EVC come from very poor homes, they do not have access to these media outlets. However, newspapers are printing work and this is being copied so that it can be passed on to the children. Teachers who live local to groups of children are overseeing their work, collecting and marking what they have done and seeking to give instruction where they can.
Pictured above we can see teachers from St Matia Mulumba delivering the teaching materials to the children in the area where Father Boniface comes from. This is quite a distance from the school, approximately 1 - 1 ½ hours by car.
Even the headteacher is taking reading materials to our sponsored children!
The country has started a phased easing of lockdown restrictions; however, it appears that schools will remain closed until September at least.
In her latest update, Gonzaga (our Finance and Administration Manager), says they have sourced reading materials for the Primary and Secondary students. Those children who can will come to collect the work at the compound; this is a great help as delivering the work is a lengthy process due to the distance and transportation difficulties. Gonzaga will be overseeing the distribution of the material, and Father Boniface will help, but she expects to be doing this all through August while the schools are closed.
